Breakthrough Technologies

Before reading this article, I had heard about AI, because everyone is talking about AI, and I'd heard about genetic predicting in AP Bio.

To be perfectly honest, I don't like the basis for most of these ideas, for various reasons, except for 3D metal printing, materials' quantum leap, and perfect online privacy.

The genetic fortune telling and artificial embryo ideas are likely barred by massive ethical issues, and for good reason. Looking at extremes, genetic fortune telling could eventually tell you your entire predicted medical history, which would take away from the spontaneity of life. Artificial embryos are essentially clones, which take away from the variety of life.

The Sensing City is a massive undertaking that has failed numerous times, wasting immense levels of resources that could be used elsewhere, and I struggle to see tangible benefits behind a "smart city" that don't increase human consumption.

Artificial intelligence is an intimidating concept, and I'm not sure I want more computers in my life, especially ones that are smarter than me.

Much of a person's culture is embedded in their language, so communicating through different languages is an amazing way to share cultures. Babel fish earbuds that allow you to hear and speak in your own language while your conversant hears and speaks in another take away from the human and cultural interaction associated with learning new languages.

Zero carbon natural gas is a tempting concept, but it is still a fossil fuel, and the article mentions that collected carbon from emissions could be used for oil extraction. Resources developing this technology could be directed toward better forms of renewable energy. I almost like this idea because it focuses on reducing carbon emissions, but it could end carbon emissions and invest in solar or wind power.

3D metal printing can reduce human consumption. Materials' quantum leap has massive implications for clean energy. Perfect online privacy is perfect online privacy, can't argue with that.

I think AI for everybody is the most intriguing concept in terms of global impact since everyone uses computers. It would tremendously affect society, culture, and economy in ways difficult to predict.
